MEGAPOST: Child Rappers

Pop That: Probing Lil Poopy’s music video

I heard about this story and decided it was a great subject for a megapost.

Published on Feb 26, 2013
“Pop That” is the name of a rap video featuring a blinged out, booty-grabbing rapper. It’s making the rounds on YouTube right now.Nothing new, right? Well, the issue in this case is that the emcee grabbing the mic is not a man with gobs of street cred. He’s 10-years-old.In “Pop That” he says, “Coke ain’t a bad word.”€ Some of his other videos show him swearing and slapping a woman’s bottom.

Jay-Z and Kanye West ft. Frank Ocean – No Church in the Wild (2012)

Director Romain Gavras, who also directed M.I.A.’s “Born Free” and “Bad Girls”

Jay-Z, Kanye West’s ‘No Church’ Video Sparks Revolution

Moments before the beat builds, we see a young masked revolutionary ignite a Molotov cocktail and walk in slow motion toward a wall of police officers who stand unified, draped in riot gear. The clash begins with a fiery explosion in the middle of a Prague street. Gavras depicts a power struggle familiar to people all across the globe, whether in Los Angeles in 1992 or London in 2011.

Don Trip – Letter To My Son ft. Cee-Lo (2011)

Lyrics at Rap Genius

Please, no pity for a G
Though I’ve got a son that I barely get to see
I see him for an hour. After that he’s gotta leave
On top of that, I only get to see him once a week
Yea, right, lucky me
Well fuck child support and whoever disagrees
I learned a valuable lesson, indeed
But I’m just trying to be the best father I can be
Apparently I’m an unfit father, cause all I know is dope
And all I got is dirty dollars
But I’m selling dope to help my family get farther
Cause no 9 to 5 is gonna prevent us from starving

Grandmaster Flash – The Message (1982)

Must disable annotations to watch.

LYRICS:

It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don’t care
I can’t take the smell, I can’t take the noise no more
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with the baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn’t get far
Cause a man with a tow-truck repossessed my car

Lady – Casey Anthony (2011)

From MTV.com

Lady posted the track yesterday (July 17) on her website and the track has been making its rounds on the Web as well. Named after Casey Anthony, the young mother who was indicted on charges of murdering her 3-year daughter Caylee in 2008, Anthony’s case received massive media attention ahead of her July 5 acquittal this year of all charges. No stranger to being controversial herself, Lady’s aggressive track has little to do with the case itself with the title serving as nothing more as an attention-grabbing song title.

To Lady’s credit, the track’s motivational “keep your head up” shout out to the imprisoned and criticism supporting wrongly incarcerated inmates belies the sensational use of Casey Anthony’s name in the song’s title. Lady also manages to display a degree of depth as she decries the use of capital punishment as a means of justice.

La Coka Nostra – I’m An American (2009)

Wide-ranging critique of American culture from the perspective of a struggling underclass. La Coka Nostra personify Merton’s construction of the deviant innovator, who accepts mainstream goals (money, success), but rejects (or has no access to) mainstream means of achieving such goals.

“I’m a menace with big dreams/And no morals to stop me from none/I gotta get mine, that’s why I went and copped me a gun.”

This philosophy is presented as a result of socialization in a media culture that glorifies violence, on the street and in war.

Illegitimate Children – My Girlfriend Beats Me (2008)

Lyrics at Rap Genius

Domestic abuse, it ain’t a one way system
This is kind of on the tip of some reverse racism
She told me that the kitchen is exactly where her place is
And always to look plain cos she doesn’t like the taste yes
At home I do the dishes while she watches TV
Channel surfing drunk while her man cooks and cleans
I’m always sitting shotgun when we’re rolling in my ride
She wears the pants and she likes to drive

Black eyes, bruised wrists and microwavable dinners
Telling lies to social servants, people saying I slip-uh
Either way, me leaving is not an option
Life without my lady’s like a flaming bag of dog-shit
And I’m-ma tell the cops this next time she xxxx me to stop it
They probably heard us fucking getting rowdy

Judas Priest – Breaking The Law (1980)

These dudes are so metal, they can rob a bank with just their guitars.

LYRICS:

There I was completely wasting, out of work and down
all inside it’s so frustrating as I drift from town to town
feel as though nobody cares if I live or die
so I might as well begin to put some action in my life

Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law

Cher – Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves (1973)

Cher performing Gypsys Tramps And Thieves in early 70′s (Sonny And Cher Comedy Hour)

Intergenerational transmission of class and stigma.

LYRICS:

I was born in the wagon of a travelin’ show
My mama used to dance for the money they’d throw
Papa would do whatever he could
Preach a little gospel
Sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

CHORUS:
Gypsies, tramps and thieves
We’d hear it from the people of the town
They’d call us gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down
