They can dance, check your heart rate, vacuum your room, make dinner, or wash the dishes — all without complaining, or asking for a raise. A new generation of robots not only looks human, but is taking on human tasks. Constantino De Miguel reports from Europe’s largest robotics expedition in Lyon, France, where it’s clear that it’s only a matter of time before robots populate our homes, schools, hospitals, and cities. Technology is moving fast when it comes to “autonomous systems”, intelligent machines that perform tasks with little or no human guidance. In modern warfare, drones and other unmanned vehicles are playing an increasing role, with militaries embracing a technology that they say makes war safer and more effective. But human rights campaigners fear what might be to come — fully autonomous weapons that could select and engage targets without human intervention — and they want a new global treaty to stop that from happening. Researchers look to Darwin for emotional link between man and machine

Nov. 1, 2011 – Nearly 150 years ago Charles Darwin used photographs to study how humans use their expressions to show emotion. Now scientists at Cambridge University are using videos, and the power of the internet, to update his experiments. They believe the results could help them develop emotionally-aware computers capable of understanding their users’ emotions. Stuart McDill reports.
